Key Steps for Installing and Commissioning Multimedia Filters
On this page

In installing and commissioning multimedia filters, following specific conditions and steps is crucial for ensuring the equipment operates efficiently and remains stable over the long term. These steps cover not just the physical installation and foundation preparation but also the fine-tuning of the system's performance. Proper installation and careful commissioning help maximize the efficiency of a multimedia filter, extend its service life, and ensure the overall stability and reliability of the water treatment system. This article will guide you through the installation conditions, steps, and commissioning process to help you achieve optimal performance for your equipment.

Installation Conditions

During the installation of multimedia filters, ensuring compliance with the following conditions is key to achieving optimal performance, improving filtration efficiency, and ensuring the long-term stable operation of the equipment. These conditions not only help the normal operation of the equipment but also significantly extend its service life, reduce maintenance and fault risks, thereby ensuring the overall stability and reliability of the system.

1. Filter Cap Inspection

Before filling with filter media, it is essential to carefully check the tightness of all filter caps. The caps should be fully tightened to prevent leakage of filter media or contamination.

2. Foundation Construction

When constructing the concrete foundation, corresponding holes should be reserved according to the foot hole positions of the filter. Ensure that the foundation reaches the designed strength before lifting and assembling the filter and connecting pipes. This process ensures the stability and operational safety of the equipment.

3. Water Quality Research

It is crucial to conduct a detailed study of the local water quality before use. This includes determining the types of main pollutants in the water. Based on water quality analysis, select the appropriate type of coagulant and its dosage. Also, set the opening degree of the drainage gate valve during the backwash process to optimize the backwash effect.

4. Inlet Turbidity Control

When using multimedia filters, the turbidity of the inlet water should be strictly controlled within the design standards. Excessive inlet turbidity may cause the filter to clog prematurely, shorten the operating cycle, and even have a negative impact on the quality of the effluent. Strictly follow the design requirements for backwashing operations to prevent the formation of mud balls or other deposits within the filter layer.

5. Coagulant Addition

When using the filter directly, prepare the coagulant to the recommended concentration and add it before the pump. This can improve the sedimentation and filtration effect, enhancing the working efficiency of the filter media.

6. Parallel Use of Multiple Filters

When multiple multimedia filters are used in parallel, ensure that both the inlet and outlet pipes are equipped with gate valves. This effectively controls the flow distribution of each filter, improving the flexibility and maintainability of the system.

Installation Steps

The correct installation steps are crucial for the efficient operation of multimedia filters, as they directly affect the performance, stability, and long-term reliability of the equipment. Precise installation not only ensures that the filter can work normally according to the design specifications but also prevents potential faults and performance degradation. The following are the detailed installation steps.

1. Civil Foundation

Before installation, ensure that the civil foundation has been completed according to the design requirements. Place the equipment correctly according to the equipment blueprint and adjust the legs to ensure the stability of the equipment. Check the level and verticality of the inlet and outlet flanges to ensure the accuracy of the equipment installation.

2. Welding and Fixing

Weld and fix the embedded iron plates of the equipment and the foundation. After welding, check the level and verticality of the flanges again to ensure that the equipment will not deviate during operation.

3. Pipeline Assembly

Assemble the pipelines according to the equipment number and design drawing. Before assembly, thoroughly clean the inner walls of the pipelines with a clean cloth to avoid impurities affecting the filtration effect. During assembly, ensure that the pipeline axis is level and vertical, and confirm that the valve direction is correct (manual valve handle forward, pneumatic valve actuator head upward). Check whether the valve switches on the valve body are flexible and repair any possible blockages in time.

4. Support and Attachment Installation

After completing the pipeline connection of the main body of the multimedia filter, necessary support work is required on the valve group. Install accessories such as inlet/outlet pressure gauges, sampling valves, etc. If there is a flow probe plate in the pipeline, plug it with a plug to ensure the normal operation of the system.

Testing and Commissioning Process

The testing and commissioning process is a key step to ensure the normal operation and optimal performance of the multimedia filter. The following is a detailed commissioning process to ensure that the equipment can work efficiently and stably.

1. Manual Mode Adjustment

Adjust the working mode of the filter to the manual gear, close all valves (except for the top exhaust valve). Fully open the backwash water inlet automatic valve, and the backwash drainage valve should also be fully open. The backwash water inlet manual valve should be opened to 1/4 position for the first time.

2. Backwash Pump Start

Start a backwash pump and slowly open the backwash water inlet manual valve for water backwashing. Observe the backwashing condition of the filter media in the lower mirror, and at the same time, take a sample from the backwash discharge port with a transparent container to check whether there is any filter media running out. Adjust the opening to ensure that the backwash water reaches the required strength until the discharge is clear.

3. Air Backwashing

Close the backwash pump and backwash water inlet valve. Open the positive discharge valve and adjust the water level in the filter to the middle of the upper mirror. Fully open the backwash air inlet automatic valve and slowly open the backwash air inlet manual valve. Observe the churning condition of the filter media in the lower mirror to achieve the backwash state. The air backwash lasts for 2-3 minutes, then repeat the water backwash until the filter media is completely clean.

4. Automatic Mode Adjustment

After the first backwash of the filter media is completed, adjust the working mode of the filter to the automatic gear. Set the automatic backwash cycle of the filter according to the quality of the raw water to optimize the filtration effect and the operational efficiency of the equipment.

By thoroughly adhering to the installation conditions and steps outlined above, and by carefully conducting the commissioning process, you lay a solid foundation for the multimedia filter's efficient and stable operation. Proper installation and commissioning not only enhance equipment performance and extend its lifespan but also minimize maintenance needs and reduce the risk of faults. Ultimately, ensuring the filter operates reliably under various conditions will safeguard your water treatment system and deliver the expected filtration results.
